Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a method of stretching and strengthening designed to comfortably, safely, and effectively optimize the body’s mobility and performance. It is extremely helpful for not only the casual and serious athlete but for anyone experiencing diminished flexibility from injury, disease, or aging.
The benefits of AIS include:
•Increased flexibility, range of motion, & strength
•Healthier muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and joints
•Reduced risk of muscle spasms, strains, and tears
• Breakdown of adhesions caused by trauma or inflammation
• Improved circulation of blood, nutrients, and lymph which promote tissue growth and repair
AIS has been developed by Kinesiotherapist Aaron Mattes of Sarasota Florida. It involves both active and passive movement with the practitioner gently taking you slightly beyond what you can do on your own for no more than 2 seconds. Research is showing this approach, unlike prolonged stretching, to be a safe way to maximize flexibility without harming tissues. After evaluation and instruction the stretches can often be done on one’s own.
